The continued battle against narcotics in Punjab under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann through “Yudh Nashian Virodh” (War Against Drugs) has resulted in a tremendous accomplishment on its 361st day; coordinated raids conducted by the Punjab Police across the state resulted in the arrests of 88 drug traffickers and the seizure of 5 kilograms of heroin.
Massive Haul Disrupts Smuggling Networks
Operations motive was focused on smuggling hotspots such as border regions which have a history of cross-border trafficking; heroin; valued in crores as per black-market value (as well as cash, cars, and weapons that are being used as tools by the terrorists); therefore, through significant seizures made during these operations, they emphasized dismantling organised syndicates that are supplying drugs to the communities of Punjab creating a drug epidemic.
CM Mann’s Vision Bears Fruit
The Bhagwant Mann-led initiative has placed an emphasis on policies focused on targeted policing based on information gathered from investigations; on rehabilitation; and on programs aimed at increasing youth awareness. According to CM Mann, “We are in a people’s war; we will not, however, rest until we have liberated the state from the scourge of drugs,” following the completion of any operations. Approximately 30,000 arrests, and several tons of narcotics seized, demonstrate the positive impact that the campaign has had on street-level supply.
Path Forward: Sustained Momentum
Experts admire the data-driven approach that combines law enforcement with de-addiction centres. Day 361’s successful operation gives hope to Punjab as it continues to deal with the increasing influx of synthetic drugs and heroin from Afghanistan. The ongoing commitment of law enforcement and the de-addiction centres in Punjab indicate that the province has a bright future ahead for its youth.
Through these efforts, law enforcement has demonstrated its willingness to continue to work diligently to create a drug-free Punjab.
