The ban on fuel-based two-wheelers is likely to come into effect in Chandigarh around July 6-7. Only 702 registrations are left for fuel based (petrol-diesel) two wheelers under the EV policy in Chandigarh. Industrialists of the city have called a meeting today regarding the Electric Vehicle Policy (EV) after Chandigarh Mayor Anoop Gupta warned of protests if the ban is implemented. Chandigarh Mayor has said that non-EVs will not be allowed in the city.

Review meeting on EV policy in Chandigarh

Arulrajan P, CEO of Chandigarh Renewable Energy and Science and Technology Promotion Society (CREST), issued a letter regarding the review meeting. Mid-term review meeting on EV Policy 2022 is being held today under the chairmanship of Advisor. Several officials including mayor, home secretary, finance secretary, commissioner, deputy commissioner and transport director are involved in the meeting held in the new secretariat building. However, a senior Chandigarh administration official said that this review meeting is a mid-term review meeting regarding the EV policy. This meeting has nothing to do with the mayor’s threatElectric Vehicle Policy in Chandigarh in September 2022: The Chandigarh Administration launched its Electric Vehicle Policy in September 2022 to declare it a model EV city and the city with the highest EV density.

According to this policy, a target has been set to phase out fuel based vehicles every year. As per the policy, the registration of fuel-based two-wheelers will be completely banned by next year. Apart from this, the number of fuel-based four wheelers is also expected to be very less.

Target set for every year

In this regard, minimum attainable targets have been fixed for every year. The target for the current financial year 2023-24 is a 20 per cent reduction in fuel-based four-wheelers. According to this, only 22,626 four wheelers can be registered in the city. Apart from this, two-wheelers can be reduced by 70 percent. Accordingly, only new registrations of 6,202 are allowed.
