Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday took up with the Union Environment Minister the matter of taxes and immediate release of pending share of Rural Development Fund (RDF) to make Punjab a leading state of the country.
Addressing a workshop for effective management of paddy straw here, the Chief Minister stressed the need for financial stability of the states to contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.
Centre, state must join hands for crop residue management
The Chief Minister sought the intervention of Union Environment Minister Bhupinder Yadav to raise the issue at an appropriate forum. Describing paddy straw as an asset, he underlined the need to develop a sustainable mechanism for its management to eliminate the problem of crop-residue burning.
“This is a long-pending issue of the entire northern region, but farmers do not have any viable mechanism to manage crop residue,” Mann said. Farmers do not want to burn stubble because their families have to bear the brunt of it first.”
“The central and state governments will have to join hands by formulating a mutual action plan to deal with the menace by ensuring procurement of stubble,” he said.
Giving the example of Verbio Company, Mann said that the firm manages stubble in 47,000 acres and should be further encouraged in its work. The CM said that the state government has taken the responsibility of assured remuneration for all the crops. The CM also said that farmers need to take up allied agriculture activities.
