Cyber Crime: Man loses ₹6 lakh in fraud job offer in Chandigarh

Cyber Crime: Job scams are on the rise in India, exemplified by a recent case in Chandigarh where a man lost over ₹6 lakh due to falling for a fraud job offer received through various job portals. The victim, Navin Gupta, had uploaded his CV on multiple job search websites.

According to reports, on June 22, he received a phone call from an individual claiming to be affiliated with a national media organization, offering him a job. The caller requested ₹6,500 as a fee for arranging an interview.

Trusting the credibility of the call

Trusting the credibility of the call, Gupta made the money transfer. Subsequently, he was coerced into making additional payments on various pretexts, including mandatory courses, document verification, medical examinations, and IT training. Ultimately, he received a counterfeit appointment letter. After disbursing more than ₹6.4 lakh, Gupta sought help from the authorities, resulting in an official case being filed at the cybercrime police station.

To protect oneself from such scams, it’s crucial to:

  1. Use reputable job portals like LinkedIn, Naukri.com, Indeed, etc., for job applications.
  2. Verify job offers by thoroughly researching the person offering the job, including their name and the company they claim to represent.
  3. Be cautious about sharing personal information, ensuring it’s provided only on established and trustworthy websites.
  4. Never send money to an unfamiliar bank account or share your banking credentials, as legitimate companies do not require payment for job opportunities.
