Punjab Aam Aadmi Party is now planning to start its second batch of 17 “public quarries”. This public quarries will be at Fazilka, Ludhiana, Tarn Taran, Ropar, Nawanshahr and Jalandhar. However Jalandhar already have a largest public mine at Mao Sahib.
The government has said that by end of fiscal year we are planning to open 50 public mines
Principal Secretary (Mines) Gurkirat Kirpal Singh said “these are the sites that were left out from the auction of quarries in 2018, the last time the quarries were auctioned. The government wanted to give relief to the public from the high sand prices and thus these public mining sites have been operationalised,” he said.
Earlier Punjab Government has fixed the rates of sand and gravel at Rs 5.50 per cubic foot. This decision of the government will be of great benefit to the people building houses. Giving this information, the spokesperson of the Chief Minister's Office said that in August 2022, the state government had fixed the price of sand and gravel from mining at Rs 9 per cubic foot, which included the cost of loading.
He said that during the recent times, there was a big difference between the demand and supply of sand and gravel, as a result of which the price increased a lot. That's why the cabinet also gave the director the right to review tenders to increase the local availability of sand in the state, while earlier this right was rejected due to some circumstances. These agreements were actually valid only till February-March 2023 and thus can be renewed only for two months during which time the sand supply will increase and the department will try to complete the new tendering process.
