Kotkapura firing: SIT files supplementary chargesheet against Badal, ex-DGP Sumedh Saini

The SIT of Punjab Police probing the Kotkapura firing case presented a supplementary challan of 2497 pages against the already chargesheeted accused during the hearing of the case in the court of JMIC Ajaypal Singh on Tuesday. In this supplementary challan, the charge sheet also includes the letter of Home Department giving permission to run the case against the then Chief Minister Prakash Badal, Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Badal, then DGP Sumedh Singh Saini and other police officers.

At the time of hearing of the case, only the then DIG Ferozepur Amar Singh Chahal and the then SHO City Kotkapura Gurdeep Singh were present among the named accused, while other officers including Prakash Badal, Sukhbir Badal, Sumedh Saini, cited different reasons through lawyers. Excused the attendance. The matter will now be heard on May 16.According to the information, two FIRs have been registered in connection with the incident of Kotkapura firing, out of which one case (FIR No. 192) was registered by the police on the day of the incident, October 14, 2015, while the other case (FIR No. 129) was registered on August 7, 2015. On the statement of Ajit Singh, who was injured in the firing in 2018, on the policewas registered.

On the instructions of the Punjab-Haryana High Court, the SIT, headed by ADGP Punjab Police LK Yadav, after probing both the FIRs, filed a charge sheet of about 7,000 pages in the JMIC court on February 24 this year. Apart from Prakash Badal, Sukhbir Badal, six police officers, the then DGP Sumedh Saini, IG Paramraj Umranangal, DIG Firozpur Amar Singh Chahal, SSP Moga Charanjit Singh Sharma, SSP Faridkot Sukhmandar Singh Mann and the then SHO City Kotakpura Gurdeep Singh were made accused.

After the charge sheet was filed, all these accused have appeared in the court after getting anticipatory bail and have been released on a surety bond of Rs 5 lakh each. During the hearing of the case on Tuesday, the SIT filed a supplementary challan against all of them.
