Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Friday called for maximum utilization of the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) scheme to promote development in rural areas on the one hand and provide livelihood opportunities to people in the state.

Over a meeting here today to review the working of the scheme, the Chief Minister (CM) said that it provides at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in every financial year to every household whose adult members voluntarily do unskilled manual work.

He said that this scheme has been implemented in all the districts of Punjab since April 2008 and the state government will increase the budget of this ambitious scheme to Rs 2000 crore.
Mann said that it was heartening to know that 11.53 lakh job cards involving 14.86 lakh workers are active in the state.
