The scheduled election for the Mayor's post in the Chandigarh Municipal Corporation, set for Thursday, has been postponed due to the reported "ill-health" of the nominated presiding officer. However, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), in alliance with the Congress, has strongly protested the delay, labeling it as a "ploy of the BJP."
AAP and Congress Allege BJP's Involvement
With 13 councillors from AAP and seven from the Congress jointly vying for the Mayoral position, the parties staged a demonstration outside the civic body building. The protesters, including AAP and Congress councillors, expressed their discontent, alleging that the postponement was a strategic move by the BJP.
Pawan Kumar Bansal, Congress leader and former MP, accused the BJP of orchestrating the delay to avoid an impending defeat. He emphasized that if there were genuine concerns about the presiding officer's health, a replacement could have been promptly appointed.
An official communication circulated within the councillor group cited a telephonic message regarding the ill-health of Anil Masih, the nominated presiding authority. The message requested councillors to refrain from reaching the Municipal Corporation office until further orders are received.
