Punjab Achieves 78% Canal Irrigation Coverage: CM Bhagwant Mann

This marks a major shift in irrigation access, especially in areas that were earlier dependent on groundwater sources.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday said that the state has significantly expanded its canal-based irrigation system, increasing coverage from 22 percent to 78 percent.

Highlighting the government’s efforts, Mann said more than 15,539 kilometres of canals have been cleaned to improve water flow and ensure effective distribution across agricultural regions. He added that an investment of ₹5,700 crore has been made to strengthen irrigation infrastructure in the state.

According to the Chief Minister, canal water has now reached around 1,365 villages, many of which had not received such supply for the past 40 to 50 years. This marks a major shift in irrigation access, especially in areas that were earlier dependent on groundwater sources.

Mann emphasised that the initiative is not just about supporting agriculture

Mann emphasised that the initiative is not just about supporting agriculture but also about securing the future of coming generations. He noted that increased canal irrigation will help reduce excessive groundwater extraction, which has been a major concern in Punjab.

Officials said the expansion of canal irrigation is expected to lower input costs for farmers, improve crop productivity and ensure a more sustainable water management system in the state.

The state government stated that continued focus on irrigation reforms and infrastructure development will remain a priority to further strengthen the agricultural sector and ensure long-term environmental sustainability.
