Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann extended heartfelt greetings to the people on the occasion of Bandi Chhor Divas, celebrated in remembrance of the sixth Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, who was released from the Gwalior Fort along with 52 kings.
Message of Freedom and Humanity
Mann said that the day symbolizes the victory of compassion, justice, and humanity. He emphasized that Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji’s act of securing the release of others before his own reflected the true essence of selflessness and service to humanity.
Symbol of Courage and Equality
He further noted that the teachings of the Guru inspire people to stand up for the oppressed and fight against injustice in every form. “This occasion reminds us to uphold human values and ensure that truth and equality always prevail,” Mann stated.
Celebrations Across Punjab
Across Punjab, gurdwaras were beautifully illuminated, and devotees gathered to offer prayers, partake in langars, and celebrate the spirit of freedom and compassion associated with this sacred day.
Bandi Chhor Divas coincides with Diwali, making it a dual celebration across Punjab. While people across India light diyas to celebrate the return of Lord Ram to Ayodhya, Sikhs commemorate Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji’s return to Amritsar, where the Golden Temple was illuminated in his honour. The beautifully lit Harmandir Sahib continues to be the centre of grand celebrations, symbolizing spiritual light and liberation.
Historical Significance
The event marks an important moment in Sikh history when Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji, imprisoned in Gwalior Fort by Emperor Jahangir, refused to leave until all 52 detained kings were freed with him. This selfless act earned him the title of ‘Bandi Chhor’ (the Liberator), reminding humanity of the importance of standing up for the rights and freedom of others.
Message for the Present Generation
Bhagwant Mann urged people to draw inspiration from Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji’s courage and compassion. He said that in today’s times, when society faces divisions and injustice, it is essential to remember the Guru’s message of unity, equality, and moral strength. He encouraged citizens to follow the path of truth and harmony to build a peaceful and progressive Punjab.
Festive Spirit Across the State
Across Punjab, cities and towns were adorned with lights, fireworks, and processions. Devotees offered prayers and participated in community langars (free meals), reflecting the Sikh tradition of seva (selfless service). The day was also marked by special kirtan sessions, spreading the message of peace and gratitude.
