Punjab CM expresses concern over falling groundwater

Stressing on the need to provide a sustainable environment to future generations, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Monday called for launching a mass movement to save water and environment. Presiding over the state-level function on the occasion of World Environment Day, he expressed concern over the depleting ground water level and polluting environment in the state.
He said that there was an urgent need to check environmental pollution as well as take remedial steps to save Punjab’s only precious and scarce natural resource in terms of water.

Mann said that this cannot be done by the government alone, but people’s participation is necessary by launching a vigorous public awareness campaign to make people aware of its importance, especially in the wake of global warming.

Quoting Gurbani, he said that the poem ‘Pawan Guru, Paani Pita, Mata Dharat Mahat’ tells how “our great gurus have regarded the wind as the teacher, the water as the father and the land as the mother.”

The Chief Minister said that the time had come when we should imbibe the teachings of Gurbani in letter and spirit to restore the pride of the State.

Hitting out at the opposition parties for openly ignoring environmental issues, he said since water, air and land do not have votes, these leaders ignored them.

Mann said that this massive pollution and degradation of these natural resources has caused irreparable damage to the society. He said that after the formation of the AAP government in the state, several steps have been taken to save the environment.

Expressing concern over the seriousness of the emerging situation after the rapidly depleting water table, the Chief Minister said that almost all the blocks in the State were in the dark zone as far as ground water was concerned.

Mann said that this happened due to careless filling of water in the fields.
