Punjab CM outlines govt’s efforts for paddy straw management

Kharif season is at its peak. Under which harvesting of early varieties of paddy has started these days. With this, once again the problem of paddy straw has emerged as a challenge for the farmers. In fact, to dispose of paddy straw, farmers burn the straw in the field itself. Due to which there is a bad effect on the health of the soil, while the stubble smoke pollutes the environment and causes diseases. In such a situation, the government is running many schemes regarding stubble management properly. Meanwhile, scientists have discovered a useful use of straw. Under which stubble has proved to be very useful for the farmers cultivating kinnow.

In fact, in the past, Punjab Agricultural University had done a study regarding the use of straw in the cultivation of kinnow. The results of which have been amazing. For example, straw has been found useful in improving the production of kinnow and in the management of weeds.

The Punjab Agricultural University had used stubble in the kinnow tree as mulching. In this study, university experts assessed moisture conservation, fruit drop status, weed infestation, fruit yield and quality of kinnow. The Dibune has published a report in this regard. In which University expert Dr Harsimrat Kaur Bones has been quoted as saying that the use of paddy straw as mulch in kinnow cultivation reduces fruit drop and effectively manages weeds in kinnow orchards.

According to Krishna Kumar, during the study, the highest fruit yield was obtained by using paddy straw as mulch, which was equivalent to weeding and plastic mulching.

The Central as well as the State Government are making efforts for stubble management in Kharif season. In this episode, the central government has started a scheme for stubble management with machines. Under which machines are given to the farmers on subsidy. In this episode, the Punjab government has given machines to a large number of farmers. On the other hand, the Haryana government is giving up to one thousand rupees per acre to the farmers for stubble management in other ways like preventing the farmers from burning stubble in the field.

Also Punjab Chief Minister, during a meeting with the farmers here at Punjab Bhawan, said that the state government is not leaving any stone unturned for this cause.

He said that the state government is making an all-out effort for paddy straw management.

“The farmers should support the state government for this noble cause by not burning the paddy straw. It is the need of the hour for protecting the environment of the state,” said CM Mann.

The Chief Minister said that” the farmers who have suffered a loss due to the attack of pink worms and others pests will also be duly compensated.”

“The state government is fully committed to well being of the farmers of the state. It is the bounden duty of the government to help the farmers in this hour of crisis,” he added.

Dwelling on another issue, the Chief Minister said that every effort is being made to duly compensate the farmers while acquiring even an inch of their land.
