Punjab fined of Rs 2000 crore for poor waste management

The National Green Tribunal has imposed a fine of Rs 2000 crore on the Punjab government. This fine has been imposed for not managing the solid and liquid waste which is harmful to the environment. A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice Adarsh Kumar Goel has also rreprimanded the Punjab government in this matter.

Earlier too, the NGT had imposed a fine of Rs 50 crore on the Punjab government. This fine was also imposed for playing with the environment.

The amount of waste that is being generated in Punjab, its management is very less than that. Due to the huge gap in waste generation and its management, the NGT had asked the government to take measures. Even after the NGT’s direction, the government did not take it seriously.

A bench headed by NGT Chairperson Justice AK Goel said corrective action cannot wait indefinitely and health issues can be avoided for a long time. He said, ‘It is the responsibility of the state to make a comprehensive plan to control pollution, which is its full responsibility, which is not being understood.’

“If there is a shortfall in the budgetary allocation, it is only for the state and the state to make a suitable plan by either reducing the cost or increasing the resources,” the bench said.

According to the NGT, the total compensation is Rs 2,180 crore. Of this, the Punjab government has already deposited Rs 100 crore with the tribunal for failing to stop the discharge of untreated sewage and solid waste.

“The remaining Rs 2080 crore may be deposited in separate accounts within two months to the state of Punjab,” the bench said. The NGT is monitoring the compliance of states’ Municipal Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016 and other environmental issues.
