The Punjab government, under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, has made decisions to lower discretionary grants for key officials. The Chief Minister's discretionary grant has been decreased from Rs 50 crore to Rs 37 crore, while the discretionary grants for all ministers have been adjusted from Rs 1.5 crore per year to Rs 1 crore per year. Similarly, the Punjab Vidhan Sabha Speaker's discretionary grant has also been reduced from Rs 1.5 crore to Rs 1 crore.

The unused funds allocated by the 15th Finance Commission to these local governing bodies have contributed to this move

These decisions were reached during a Punjab cabinet meeting and are a response to the available funds within the state's panchayats. The unused funds allocated by the 15th Finance Commission to these local governing bodies have contributed to this move.

This isn't the first time such adjustments have been made. Earlier this year, during the current calendar year, there was a previous reduction in discretionary grants for ministers. In January, their grants were lowered from Rs 3 crore (which was the amount provided during the Congress government's term) to Rs 1.5 crore. Initially, when the Congress party first came into power, ministers were allocated a larger amount of Rs 5 crore as discretionary grant. The Chief Minister's discretionary grant was initially set at Rs 50 crore.
