In a major crackdown on corruption and the drug network thriving within Punjab’s prison system, the Bhagwant Mann-led government has suspended 25 jail officials and staff members with immediate effect. The suspended personnel include three deputy superintendents and two assistant superintendents, along with others from various jails across the state.
The decision comes after the government received multiple complaints and reports alleging corruption, dereliction of duty, and direct or indirect involvement of prison staff in promoting drug trafficking inside jail premises.
CM Bhagwant Mann's Strong Stand on Drug Eradication
Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has repeatedly emphasized his government's zero-tolerance approach toward drug abuse and systemic corruption. He had earlier warned that no individual, irrespective of their rank or position, would be spared if found complicit in illegal activities.
This recent suspension drive reflects the seriousness with which the Punjab government is addressing the issue. CM Mann said that this is just the beginning and further action will be taken to clean up the jail system.
Alarming Reports Prompt Action
Sources revealed that recent inspections and surprise visits to several jails unearthed shocking revelations, including illegal supply of narcotics, smuggling of mobile phones, and preferential treatment being given to certain inmates in exchange for bribes. These findings pushed the administration to act swiftly against the erring officials.
Roadmap for Clean and Disciplined Prisons
Punjab’s jail department has now been instructed to adopt stricter internal monitoring systems and implement reforms that ensure transparency and discipline. Senior officials have been put on notice and warned that any future instance of collusion or negligence will attract harsh penalties.
The Mann government has also intensified coordination between the jail department and anti-narcotics units to dismantle drug supply chains operating from within prison walls. With this bold step, the state reiterates its commitment to creating a safer, drug-free Punjab.
