What did the police say on incident?

The Bhagwant Mann-led government and the state police chief have been criticized by opposition parties for their handling of the Ajnala incident. It is alleged that they submitted to the demands of the radical Amritpal Singh and his followers instead of taking necessary measures against them. As a result of this confrontation, Lovepreet Toofan, a close associate of Amritpal Singh, was released from Amritsar jail on February 24.

According to the police, these nine aides were granted licenses for self-defence, not for safeguarding the Khalistani leader. On February 24, Amritpal Singh, the leader of Waris Punjab De, along with his followers, some of whom were wielding guns and swords, forcibly entered a police station located on the outskirts of Amritsar city in Ajnala.

Six policemen injured in clash

The group demanded the release of Lovepreet Singh Toofan, who was accused of kidnapping and asked them from the police to let him go. The incident resulted in six policemen getting injured during the clash.

On March 1st, 18 officers in the Punjab Police were transferred to new positions. Among these transfers was Jaskaran Singh, who was appointed as the Inspector General of Police (Intelligence) in Mohali. Previously, he had served as the Police Commissioner of Amritsar but was removed from this position after an incident involving extremist leader Amritpal Singh and his supporters. During this incident, Singh and hundreds of his supporters clashed with police forces, broke through barricades, and entered the Ajnala police station.
