To ensure maximum use of natural resources to save the state’s environment, The Punjab government led by Bhagwant Mann has taken several important initiatives during the year 2022 to bring revolution in the field of clean and green energy.
Taking forward the state’s master plan for a sustainable rural economy, the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, Shri Hardeep Singh Puri and the Chief Minister of Punjab, S. Asia’s Largest Compressed Bio Gas (CBG) Plant at Village Bhutal Kalan, Sangrur in October, 2022 by Bhagwant Mann was inaugurated.
The plant has been commissioned by Germany’s leading bio-energy company Varbio AG with a foreign direct investment of about Rs 220 crore. 33.23 tonnes of CBG per day. Spread over an area of 20 acres, the plant with a total capacity of 1.5 lakh tonnes will consume one lakh tonnes of straw.
This project will generate about 600-650 tonnes of fermented organic manure daily, which can be used for organic agriculture. The state government has also constituted a task force to discuss developing a methodology for procurement and lifting of fermented organic manure produced from agricultural residue-based Compressed Biogas (CBG) projects in the state.
Punjab Energy Development Agency (PEDA) has taken up 42 more CBG projects with a total capacity of 492.58 Tonnes Per Day (TPD) based on paddy straw and other agricultural residues to develop sustainable and sustainable solutions to curb stubble burning. Has also been allotted, due to which the rural economy will also be strengthened.
These projects are expected to generate employment opportunities for more than 8000 skilled/unskilled persons as well as private investment of about Rs.1200 crores.
One lakh farming motors to be converted to solar power
The Government has decided to convert one lakh agricultural tubewells running on electricity in the state to solar energy. On completion of this project, the expenditure on electricity subsidy of Rs 200 crore will be saved annually. PEDA is in the process of selecting Solar Power Generators (S.P.G.s) to convert 25,000 grid connected agriculture motors to solar power at feeder level.
It is worth mentioning that the Punjab Government provides free electricity for agricultural motors to 13.88 lakh farmers of the state and in lieu of the subsidy of free electricity given to the farmers, PSPCL. About 7000 crore rupees are paid annually.
