Punjab may undergo change of leadership

The state BJP is about to undergo the long-awaited change of leadership. There will probably be a new president of the state unit soon.

Sunil Jakhar, a current BJP politician and former president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, is one of the front-runners, according to sources. Jakhar declined to make a statement, claiming he hadn’t yet gotten an official confirmation.

Rumours about Ashwani Sharma’s departure from the position as state president of the BJP were denied. Sharma said in a tweet that he had not quit because doing so was against BJP culture.

For the past year, the state BJP has been preparing for a change of leadership at the top. Dushyant Gautam, the BJP’s state unit director and the party’s national general secretary, said last year that the party has long served as a junior ally in Punjab, contesting only 23 Assembly seats.

He placed a focus on developing the organisational structure of the party under new leadership. The party has already pushed its top leaders to evaluate the party’s performance in each of the 13 Lok Sabha constituencies with an eye on the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Three union ministers were chosen by the party to oversee the operations of nine Lok Sabha constituencies last year. Gajendra Shekhawat, a Union Jal Shakti minister, was given responsibility for Anandpur Sahib, Hoshiarpur, and Bathinda.

While Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya was tasked with handling the Patiala, Sangrur, and Ludhiana constituencies, Union Minister Arjun Meghwal was responsible for Amritsar, Jalandhar, and Gurdaspur.

In addition, two more central leaders, Hardeep Singh Puri and Minakshi Lekhi, who both recently visited Bathinda and Gurdaspur, are also contributing. Today marked the end of Shekhawat’s two-day visit to the Anandpur Sahib electoral district.
