In an unprecedented initiative, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government in Punjab has announced the inauguration of upgraded infrastructure in 12,000 state government schools within just 54 days. The campaign, titled Punjab Sikhya Kranti, will commence on April 7 and conclude on May 31.

The large-scale event will witness top political figures, including the Chief Minister, Education Minister, Members of Parliament (MPs), and Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs), inaugurating newly constructed and renovated school facilities. These include repaired boundary walls, additional classrooms, upgraded toilets, and new furniture. Each school will install an inaugural plaque at a cost of ₹5,000.

Political Involvement Sparks Debate

The government's decision to limit inauguration duties to elected representatives has sparked criticism. Democratic Teachers Front (DTF) state president Vikram Dev Singh questioned the move, stating, “Instead of ending the VVIP culture, the government is promoting it in schools. They have turned principals and teachers into event managers rather than allowing them to focus on education.”

Defending the campaign, Education Minister Harjot Bains said that elected representatives have always played a role in inaugurations. He emphasized that their visits would allow them to assess school conditions firsthand and contribute to further improvements. “This is a statutory provision under the Right to Education Act, 2009, ensuring that public representatives monitor schools effectively,” he stated.

Expanded School Management Committees

In a related development, the Punjab Cabinet has approved the expansion of school management committees. The number of members in these panels will increase from 12 to 16, incorporating a representative of the local MLA and a member of the respective urban local body.

AAP leader Manish Sisodia, recently appointed Punjab in-charge, along with Minister Harjot Bains, has already conducted visits to various schools in Mohali, Fatehgarh Sahib, Gurdaspur, and Tarn Taran to assess infrastructure improvements.

The AAP government’s initiative is expected to bring much-needed upgrades to Punjab’s education sector, though concerns over political involvement in school administration remain a topic of discussion.
