Punjab News: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP from Anandpur Sahib, Malvinder Singh Kang, on Wednesday sought an adjournment of Lok Sabha proceedings to address the pressing issue of sacrilege of holy texts in Punjab.

Kang urged the Centre to expedite Presidential assent to the Indian Penal Code (Punjab Amendment) Bill 2018 and the Code of Criminal Procedure (Punjab Amendment) Bill 2018. These bills propose stricter penalties, including life imprisonment, for sacrilegious acts against any religious texts.

Pending Bills Highlighted

Speaking to the media, Kang expressed concern over the delay, stating, "The Punjab Assembly had unanimously passed these bills in 2018, reflecting the collective sentiment of the people. Despite this, the bills remain pending for Presidential assent even after six years. This delay undermines the emotions of Punjab's people and the nation."

Upholding Religious Sanctity

Kang emphasized the importance of preserving the sanctity of all religious texts, calling on the Centre to act promptly. He stated that the proposed amendments aim to send a strong message against acts of sacrilege, ensuring respect and harmony among all faiths.

A Unified Demand

The motion has garnered widespread support from various stakeholders, with Kang urging the government to prioritize this matter in the interest of justice and social harmony. The demand aligns with Punjab's broader efforts to uphold religious dignity and maintain peace in the region.

The Centre’s response to this demand is awaited, as the issue continues to resonate strongly across Punjab and beyond.
