In a major move aimed at strengthening public healthcare, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s government has announced that anti-rabies injections will now be administered free of cost at all Aam Aadmi Clinics across Punjab.

The announcement was made by the AAP Punjab unit through an official tweet, calling it a significant step in ensuring accessible and affordable treatment for animal bite victims. The tweet read: “Free anti-rabies injections will now be available at Aam Aadmi Clinics. A big decision by the Mann government for the people of Punjab in the healthcare sector.”

Rabies, a potentially fatal disease transmitted through the bites or scratches of infected animals such as dogs and cats, continues to be a public health concern, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where access to immediate treatment is limited. The state government’s decision is expected to benefit thousands who are otherwise burdened by the high cost of post-exposure prophylaxis.

Officials from the state health department confirmed that necessary stock arrangements have already begun and clinics will be equipped to administer the vaccines at no cost to the patient.

Healthcare experts have welcomed the move

Healthcare experts have welcomed the move, describing it as a “life-saving intervention” that reflects the government’s commitment to public welfare. “Providing anti-rabies injections for free will significantly reduce fatalities caused by delayed or no treatment, especially in low-income communities,” said a senior physician at a Ludhiana-based civil hospital.

Under Bhagwant Mann’s leadership, the Aam Aadmi Clinics have been offering a growing list of free diagnostic and treatment services, bringing accessible healthcare to the doorstep of ordinary citizens. This new initiative adds another layer to the expanding network of welfare measures rolled out by the Punjab government in recent months.

As cases of stray animal bites continue to rise in several districts, the timely provision of free anti-rabies injections is likely to be a critical and widely appreciated public health intervention.
