In a major step towards enhancing the safety and operational efficiency of jail staff, the Bhagwant Mann-led Punjab Government has approved a comprehensive security upgrade across state prisons. The initiative is aimed at equipping Punjab jail employees with modern protective gear to ensure their well-being and maintain order inside jails.

Key Highlights of the Initiative:

164 body cameras to be provided to jail personnel for real-time monitoring and accountability.

690 security kits to be purchased, which include essential protective gear.

Helmets for head protection, especially useful in high-risk confrontations.

Plastic batons and other safety tools to ensure non-lethal crowd control and self-defense.

The announcement was made by Punjab Jails Minister Laljit Bhullar, who emphasized the government's commitment to improving the working conditions of jail staff and enhancing institutional discipline.

The move comes at a time when the Punjab government is focusing heavily on internal prison reform, digitization, and strengthening the jail administration to eliminate corruption and criminal influence inside prisons.

Part of a Broader Reform Agenda

The Mann Government has consistently pushed for systemic improvements in Punjab’s law enforcement and corrections system. From cracking down on gang operations within prisons to now providing jail staff with modern equipment, these reforms are seen as part of a broader agenda to restore discipline and safety within Punjab’s prison network.

Officials said that with body-worn cameras, jail management will be able to maintain better transparency, reduce incidents of violence, and hold individuals accountable for misconduct.

This measure is also being welcomed by jail staff associations, who have long demanded better protection and support from the state. With this step, Punjab becomes one of the few states in India to implement tech-driven safety protocols in its correctional facilities.
