The Punjab government has taken a significant step toward addressing mental health issues and drug de-addiction in the state. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government, under the leadership of Health Minister Balbir Singh, has announced the formulation of a Comprehensive Mental Health Policy to make Punjab a model state in mental healthcare and rehabilitation.
As part of this initiative, the government plans to establish 4-5 new rehabilitation centers in collaboration with religious organizations to ensure accessible and community-driven de-addiction support. These centers will provide counseling, rehabilitation, and skill development programs to help individuals recover and reintegrate into society.
Punjab Government to Strengthen Mental Health and Drug De-Addiction Initiatives
To further strengthen its de-addiction framework, the government aims to maximize the use of Section 64-A of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, which focuses on rehabilitation instead of punishment for drug-dependent individuals. This legal provision will enable more individuals struggling with addiction to receive medical and psychological support rather than facing criminal charges.

Community participation remains a key focus of the initiative, with the government urging social organizations, NGOs, and citizens to work collectively in eliminating substance abuse. The administration also plans to emphasize mental health awareness, early intervention programs, and skill development initiatives to prevent relapse and ensure sustainable recovery.
With these measures, Punjab aims to set an example for other states by addressing drug addiction and mental health issues through a multi-pronged and compassionate approach. The government's renewed focus on rehabilitation, awareness, and community involvement is expected to bring a positive transformation in the lives of thousands battling addiction and mental health challenges.
