In a major push to sericulture and rural employment, the Punjab government has launched the “Har Ghar Resham” initiative to boost silk production and strengthen the livelihoods of silkworm farmers in the state. The scheme aims to make Punjab a hub for silk production by enhancing infrastructure, providing financial support, and offering training to agricultural entrepreneurs.
Key Announcements by Horticulture Minister
The scheme, spearheaded by Punjab’s Horticulture Minister Mohinder Bhagat, includes multiple strategic initiatives to enhance silk production and processing:
✅ Infrastructure Development – Establishing reeling and cocoon storage units in Pathankot and Gurdaspur, areas with strong potential for sericulture.
✅ Financial & Technical Support – Collaborating with HDFC Bank’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative to provide silkworm seeds and reeling units to farmers.
✅ Skill Development – Implementing the PHASE (Promotion of Horticulture-based Agri-Entrepreneurship) scheme to train agri-entrepreneurs and silkworm farmers in modern silk production techniques.
Commitment to Rural Development
The AAP government is committed to enhancing sericulture as an alternative income source for farmers, promoting self-sufficiency, and reducing dependence on traditional crops. The initiative aligns with the government’s vision to diversify agriculture, boost rural employment, and improve farmers' earnings.
Silk Production: A Growing Sector in Punjab
Sericulture has immense potential in Punjab’s climate, and with the government’s intervention, the sector is expected to flourish. By providing financial aid, infrastructure, and training, the initiative will empower farmers and encourage sustainable silk production.
The state government is optimistic that "Har Ghar Resham" will revive sericulture, increase Punjab’s silk production capacity, and create new economic opportunities for rural communities.
