Punjab News: In response to concerns over sluggish revenue from sand and gravel mining in Punjab, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has taken a proactive stance by instructing all Deputy Commissioners (DCs) in the state to crack down on illegal mining activities. During a recent meeting with the DCs, Mann asserted his authority, issuing direct orders to ensure immediate action against any instances of illegal mining within their respective districts.

Concerns and Opposition Allegations

The Chief Minister's directive comes amid growing concerns and allegations from opposition party leaders regarding illicit mining operations in various parts of the state. Opposition parties have pointed out deficiencies in the implementation of the Punjab State Minor Mineral Mining Policy, 2023, which includes provisions for electronic surveillance and geo-tagging of mines. The Comptroller and Auditor General's annual review report indicated a lapse in implementing these measures, while the Mines and Geology Department maintains that geo-tagging and geo-fencing were in place before mining operations commenced.

Enforcing Mining Policies

CM Bhagwant Mann's firm directive underscores the government's commitment to curbing illegal mining and ensuring adherence to mining policies. By emphasizing immediate action, the Chief Minister aims to address revenue concerns and enhance compliance with regulations in the mining sector. The move signals a proactive approach to tackle the issue and maintain transparency in the state's mining operations.
