Punjab News: CM Bhagwant Mann’s Vision: Colonial-Era Library Transformed into Modern Hub of Learning in Sangrur

Punjab News: In a remarkable initiative to revive heritage and foster a culture of reading, the colonial-era library in Sangrur has been completely transformed by the government under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann. The renovation, which cost ₹1.12 crore, has turned the once neglected Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Library into a vibrant hub of learning and knowledge.

A New Era for the Library

The library, which originally opened in 1912 and was renamed in August 2016, had been in a state of disrepair for over a century. The renovation has breathed new life into the facility, providing a spacious air-conditioned hall, free WiFi, and CCTV surveillance. The library, built on 3.7 acres and featuring parking and green areas, now boasts a seating capacity of around 235 people, up from the previous 70.

Expanding Access and Resources

With around 65,000 books, including new additions focused on state and national-level competitive exams like UPSC, CAT, JEE, NEET, and CUET, the library has become a magnet for readers from across the district. The library’s membership has surged from 6,000 to over 10,000 since the renovation. Open every day from 8 am to 9 pm, it remains bustling with visitors, including many who travel from far-flung villages.

Historical Significance and Modern Amenities

Sangrur’s history as the capital of the Jind state is reflected in the library’s collection, which includes rare reference books from the colonial era and 50 historical images of the region. The library, previously situated near the deputy commissioner’s office, was relocated to its current purpose-built structure in 1971 and taken over by the state government.

Positive Community Impact

Local students and visitors have expressed their appreciation for the renovated library. Jagdeep Singh, who travels 10 km from Ladda village, and Gurpreet Singh from Bhawanigarh, 20 km away, highlighted the library’s motivating environment and excellent resources for competitive exam preparation. The addition of a canteen run by NGO ‘Pehal’ further enhances the library’s appeal, offering tea, coffee, and snacks.

A Model for Education Revolution

The transformation of the Baba Banda Singh Bahadur Library exemplifies the AAP model of education revolution in Punjab. Deputy Commissioner Ranjodh Singh Sidhu noted that the library falls under the Department of Higher Education and offers lifetime memberships for just ₹100. The success of the Sangrur library has prompted the administration to renovate additional libraries in Dhuri and other villages.

Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s initiative has not only preserved a historical site but also created a modern educational resource that inspires and serves the community, setting a precedent for future educational reforms in the state.
