Punjab News: The Government of India has taken a significant step toward improving connectivity and reducing traffic congestion in Punjab with the approval of ₹666.81 crore for constructing the 4/6-lane Greenfield Pathankot Link Road. This transformative project is set to enhance transportation efficiency and bring economic benefits to the region.
Strategic Importance of the Link Road
Connecting Major Highways
The Pathankot Link Road will serve as a vital link between:
- NH-44 (Delhi-Srinagar): A critical arterial highway connecting northern states.
- NH-54 (Amritsar-Pathankot): Facilitating regional travel and trade.
- Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Expressway (under construction): Part of the Bharatmala Pariyojana, this expressway aims to improve long-distance travel.
By bridging these major highways, the new link road will streamline travel routes, making them shorter and more accessible.
Time and Distance Optimization
The new alignment reduces the existing NH-44 route length from 53 km to 37 km. More importantly, it slashes travel time during peak hours from 1 hour and 40 minutes to just 20 minutes. This significant reduction will benefit:
- Commuters traveling to Jammu & Kashmir.
- Freight and logistics operators, ensuring faster delivery of goods.
Alleviating Urban Congestion
Traffic Relief in Pathankot
Pathankot city, a key transit hub, often faces severe congestion due to its strategic location. The link road will:
- Divert long-haul traffic away from city roads.
- Provide a seamless bypass for heavy vehicles heading toward Jammu & Kashmir.
This development will improve urban mobility and quality of life for local residents.
Economic and Social Benefits
The project is expected to spur economic activity in the region by:
- Enhancing Trade: Efficient transportation will reduce costs for businesses.
- Creating Jobs: The construction phase will generate employment opportunities.
- Encouraging Tourism: Better connectivity will attract more visitors to tourist destinations in Jammu & Kashmir and Punjab.
