Punjab News: Punjab has recorded a 12% rise in renewable energy generation over the past four years, increasing from 7,846.01 million units (MU) in 2019-20 to 8,798.81 MU in 2023-24. This growth is primarily driven by solar and biomass energy, while generation from bagasse and both small and large hydro power has declined.

Union Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, Shripad Yesso, shared these updates in the Rajya Sabha while responding to Punjab MP Satnam Singh Sandhu. He highlighted that the National Bioenergy Programme, introduced in November 2022, has played a crucial role in supporting biomass-related projects. These include compressed bio-gas plants, non-bagasse cogeneration plants, and briquette/pellet manufacturing plants, all of which receive central financial assistance.

Solar and Biomass Drive Growth

In 2023-24, Punjab’s solar energy generation surged to 2,673.99 MU, nearly doubling from 1,358.22 MU in 2019-20. Biomass energy also witnessed a significant rise, reaching 613.44 MU in 2023-24, compared to 398.37 MU in 2019-20.

Under the National Bioenergy Programme, 16 projects have been commissioned in Punjab, utilizing agricultural residues like paddy straw as feedstock.

Decline in Hydro and Bagasse

Conversely, energy generation from bagasse fell from 252.85 MU in 2019-20 to 197.99 MU in 2023-24. Similarly, both small and large hydro power recorded a combined decline from 712.77 MU in 2019-20 to 636.97 MU in 2023-24.

Despite the setbacks in certain sectors, the overall growth in renewable energy generation underscores Punjab’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions. With continued government support and a focus on solar and biomass, the state is poised for further progress in its renewable energy journey.

The rise in renewable energy generation reflects Punjab's proactive approach to addressing energy demands while reducing its carbon footprint. By emphasizing solar and biomass projects, the state not only enhances energy security but also provides a sustainable solution to manage agricultural residue. With further investments and government-backed initiatives, Punjab is expected to solidify its position as a leader in renewable energy in the coming years.
