Punjab News: Punjab’s Timely Intervention for Heart Attack Victims

One of the key highlights of the Punjab STEMI project is its commitment to providing essential treatment without financial barriers.

Punjab News: The launch of the Punjab STEMI project marks a significant stride in the state’s healthcare infrastructure, particularly in addressing heart-related emergencies. By collaborating with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the Punjab government aims to capitalize on the critical “Golden Hour” following a heart attack. This initiative empowers secondary health facilities to swiftly administer thrombolysis treatment using the clot-busting drug Tenecteplase, thereby enhancing the chances of saving lives.

Free Access to Crucial Treatment

One of the key highlights of the Punjab STEMI project is its commitment to providing essential treatment without financial barriers. Health and Family Welfare Minister Dr. Balbir Singh underscored that the costly Tenecteplase injection, valued between Rs 25,000 to Rs 35,000, will be offered free of charge under this initiative. This gesture ensures that patients, regardless of their financial status, can benefit from timely and potentially life-saving interventions during critical moments of cardiac distress.

Expanding Reach and Improving Response Time

The successful completion of the pilot phase in Ludhiana and Patiala paved the way for the statewide implementation of the STEMI project. With over 2,800 patients enrolled and 209 receiving Thrombolysis during the pilot, the project demonstrates its capacity to deliver prompt and effective care. Dr. Balbir Singh emphasized the project’s objective of reducing the average treatment time for heart attack patients to just 90 minutes.
