In preparation for Republic Day, the Commissionerate Police established special checkpoints at four key locations across the city on Monday evening. The checkpoints, operational from 6 PM to 9 PM, were part of heightened security measures to ensure safety and prevent any untoward incidents.
Locations and Operations
According to ADCP (Traffic) Amandeep Kaur, the Emergency Response Service (ERS) teams set up checkpoints at prominent locations, including MBD Mall, Cuero Mall, Wadala Chowk, and Pathankot Chowk. During the operation, police personnel thoroughly inspected vehicles, checked documentation, and searched people’s belongings to identify any suspicious activities.
The intensified checks come in response to a directive by Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav, who recently instructed police across the state to conduct day-and-night patrolling and security checks to thwart any attempts at criminal activity ahead of the national celebration.
Future Plans and Public Appeal
Police officials have announced that similar operations will continue in the coming days, with the locations of the checkpoints being rotated to maintain an element of surprise. Authorities have also urged citizens to report any suspicious individuals or activities. To encourage cooperation, police assured that the identity of informants would be kept strictly confidential.
The enhanced security measures underline the commitment of law enforcement to ensuring a peaceful and safe Republic Day for the city’s residents. Public cooperation remains a vital component in maintaining vigilance against potential threats.
