In a significant shift towards a drug-free Punjab, over 11,603 individuals have opted for de-addiction treatment so far in the 2024–25 period, with a daily average of 32 people — mostly youth — reaching out to de-addiction centers across the state. This positive trend has been acknowledged as a key indicator of changing attitudes under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Punjab recently highlighted this progress on social media, saying:

“The fight against drugs… now on the path to success. These are not just numbers… it’s the arrival of a new Punjab.”

Rising Numbers, but Challenges Persist

According to the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, this year’s figure marks an 11% increase compared to 2021–22. However, Punjab still faces greater challenges than neighbouring Haryana, where an average of 18 people per day are turning up at de-addiction centres.

Despite the rising turnout, authorities are grappling with a worrying issue — a large number of patients fleeing de-addiction centres before completing treatment. Officials report that more than 50 youths have absconded from various centers over the past three months. Many of them were caught and returned by the police.

Proposal to Jail Escaping Patients

To address repeated escape attempts, the state health and police departments are considering a policy that would allow legal action and possible jail time for those who flee treatment after voluntarily enrolling in de-addiction programs. Coordination between departments is being strengthened to enforce stricter monitoring.

Incidents from Mohali Raise Alarms

In recent months, 13 patients fled from a de-addiction centre in Sector 66, Mohali, while in May, 23 others had escaped from the same facility. These repeated incidents have raised concerns about the security and effectiveness of rehabilitation centres.

Five-Year Trend Shows Growth in Drug Dependency

Apart from one exception, Punjab has seen an annual rise in drug users over the past five years. Authorities say that while more people are now seeking help, systemic reforms are essential to retain patients and complete their recovery journey.

Hope on the Horizon

CM Bhagwant Mann’s government continues to promote awareness campaigns and strengthen rehabilitation frameworks. The government has reaffirmed its commitment to stand by every youth willing to leave addiction behind, offering them a chance at a new life.
