Amritsar's historic Rambagh Gate and Ramparts have earned prestigious accolades from the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation this year, marking a significant milestone in preservation excellence. Architect and conservationist Gurmeet Sangha Rai spearheaded the restoration and conservation project, which not only focused on the 200-year-old Rambagh Gate but also included the surrounding structures, including a school and a printing press.

The UNESCO awards jury commended the project for its commitment to preserving the site's historical integrity while enhancing inclusivity and community access. The conservation initiative addressed not only the restoration of the gate but also revitalized a rundown building that once housed a school. The thickness of the wall segment preserved during the project reflects the original dimensions of the walled city during Maharaja Ranjit Singh's reign. The conservation efforts revitalized the school, adding classrooms, an improved courtyard, and a play area for children, all seamlessly integrated without compromising the site's authenticity.

Architect Gurmeet Rai, the driving force behind the Rambagh Gate Restoration and Conservation Project, expressed the significance of the endeavor. The project not only safeguarded a historical landmark but also revitalized educational facilities, demonstrating a holistic approach to heritage preservation.

Other Recognitions in Heritage Conservation

In addition to the recognition accorded to Rambagh Gate & Ramparts, the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards also acknowledged excellence in heritage conservation for various projects across India. Karnikara Mandapam at Kunnamangalam Bhagawati Temple in Kerala received an award of distinction, while the Church of Epiphany in Haryana was recognized with an award of merit. Notable heritage sites such as the David Sassoon Library and Reading Room in Mumbai, Bikaner House in New Delhi, and Pipal Haveli in Punjab were also acknowledged for their commitment to sustainable development and transformative heritage practices contributing to larger principles of sustainable development.
