The Punjab Vidhan Sabha paid tributes to several late leaders, including Ludhiana West MLA Gurpreet Bassi, former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, and former ministers Dharam Pal Sabharwal and Ajaib Singh Mukmailpur, during the first day of the assembly session on Monday.

Other prominent figures remembered were former Rajya Sabha member HS Hanspal and former MLAs Joginder Pal Jain, Mukhwinder Singh Buttar, and Bhag Singh. The House also honored the contributions of freedom fighters Karnail Singh, Kikkar Singh, and Kehar Singh, as well as artists Jarnail Singh and Jaspal Kaur.

CM Bhagwant Mann Absent During Tributes

Notably, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann was absent during the Obituary References. Despite his absence, the assembly proceeded with the scheduled tributes, recognizing the contributions of those who had served the state and the nation.

Demand for Bharat Ratna for Dr Manmohan Singh

Leader of the Opposition Partap Bajwa called for a unanimous resolution from the House to recommend Bharat Ratna—India’s highest civilian honor—for Dr Manmohan Singh, acknowledging his immense contributions to the country’s economic and political landscape.

Session Concludes with Two-Minute Silence

As a mark of respect, MLAs observed a two-minute silence before the session was adjourned. The Vidhan Sabha proceedings lasted only 13 minutes, making it one of the shortest sessions held.
