As part of its ongoing ‘War Against Drugs’ campaign, the Punjab Government has announced a major shift in its strategy by prioritizing rehabilitation over incarceration for drug addicts. Health Minister Dr. Balbir Singh shared updates from Fatehgarh Sahib, highlighting expanded treatment facilities and skill-based rehabilitation efforts aimed at reintegrating affected individuals into society.
Key Measures Announced
Addiction Treatment Over Imprisonment:
Drug addicts caught in the system will now be sent to de-addiction centres rather than prisons, marking a shift toward a more compassionate and reform-oriented approach.
Expanded Infrastructure in Fatehgarh Sahib:
The district has seen a significant boost in de-addiction infrastructure, with bed capacity increased from 215 to 415. This expansion has been made possible through collaboration with various supporting institutions.
Skill-Based Employment Opportunities:
Rehabilitated individuals will be provided employment opportunities based on their skills, aiding their reintegration and reducing chances of relapse.
Crackdown on Drug Traffickers:
While the approach toward addicts is reformative, the government continues to take strict and uncompromising action against drug traffickers across the state.
Public Participation in the Fight:
The government acknowledged the active support of citizens in its mission to uproot the drug menace, and encouraged continued cooperation to eliminate the problem from its roots.
Dr. Balbir Singh reiterated the Mann Government’s commitment to creating a drug-free Punjab through a blend of medical support, community involvement, and law enforcement. The initiative aims not only to treat addiction but to prevent its spread and ensure a dignified life for those affected.
