Punjab: Smart pre-paid electricity meters will be installed

Pre-paid electricity meters will be installed in all government offices in Punjab. Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) has issued an order in this regard. Under this decision, from March 1, all government offices will have to pay in advance to get electricity and as soon as the amount paid is exhausted, the electricity of the office will be switched off. 15 days’ notice is being sent to all the government offices to get the said meters installed.

It is worth noting that thousands of rupees are outstanding for electricity bill on various government departments in the state. Along with the notice being sent for the pre-paid meter, where the details of energy consumption of the last 12 months of the concerned office are being sent, the outstanding amount of the previous bills, the default amount has been asked to be deposited in one month.

Tariffs will be applicable on these pre-paid meters as per their load capacity

As per the revised policy by PSPCL, after February 15, new government electricity connections in the state will also be given with smart pre-paid meters. Tariffs will be applicable on these pre-paid meters as per their load capacity. However, a rebate of one per cent will be given in the energy charge on such meters. It has been said on behalf of PSPCL that since the departments will have to make advance payment for the connection, they can make proper accounting system for this at their level. Along with this, government departments will have to appoint a nodal officer for each of their electricity connections, whose mobile number and e-mail ID will be registered in PSPCL’s database. Electronic bill will also be issued to the consumers on monthly basis.

PSAPL will install meter at its own expense

The pre-paid meters will be procured and installed by PSPCL at its own cost. Government offices will not have to pay the cost of meters for this metering system. No security (consumption) charge will be levied for new connections being released under pre-paid mode. Only meter security and meter rent will be charged, which will be as per the schedule of general charges as applicable from time to time. No additional meter security and meter rent will be levied on existing meters of government offices, but existing consumers will also be refunded the security amount of old meters after adjusting the dues and balance amount (if any) including security (consumption) amount.
