Punjab: Peroshah hamlet in Punjab’s Gurdaspur district, with a population of over 1,000 people, has received national acclaim for excellent solid and liquid waste management. Harjinder Kaur, the sarpanch of the village that has been designated as a model ODF (open defecation free) Community, got President Droupadi Murmu’s ‘Swachh Sujal Shakti Samman 2023’ on March 4 for noteworthy work in the sanitation sector.
Peroshah hamlet’s waste management recognition
The event was organised in Delhi by the Ministry of Jal Shakti to honour women achievers who have contributed to the cause. Kaur expressed her pride at receiving the award in the presence of Union Minister for Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat. Peroshah village was recently designated as a model ODF Plus village for meeting the criteria outlined in the Swachh Bharat Mission-Grameen (SBM-G, Phase II) standards.

The ODF + designation is awarded to a community that maintains its ODF status by ensuring visual cleanliness and proper solid and liquid waste management. Bram Shanker Jimpa, Punjab’s Water Supply and Sanitation Minister, thanked the villagers of Peroshah hamlet on their accomplishment. “Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s dream is that every village in Punjab should be a model village,” he said, adding that the sanitation department is working hard to guarantee that every village in Punjab has clean water and sanitation. “President Murmu remarked at the Delhi ceremony that people should draw inspiration from Peroshah village,” Kaur said. In addition, the community contains a solid waste management and water treatment plant. Sukhraj Singh, a Peroshah native, stated that the hamlet manages its solid waste here and generates many kilogrammes of compost through good biodegradable waste management.

Compost pits have also been built for transforming wet trash into compost. “No one dumps garbage on empty plots anymore,” he remarked. “The hamlet has implemented advanced liquid waste management procedures. The residents purify dirty water and utilise it for irrigation and other purposes “He stated. He stated that four years ago, the villages analysed how polluted water should be treated, and that work on establishing the plant began in April of this year, and that it was operational six months later.
