Punjab has made significant advancements in horticulture and sericulture under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Horticulture Minister Mohinder Bhagat. The state’s commitment to sustainability, crop diversification, and farmer prosperity has set new benchmarks in agricultural innovation.

Key Achievements in Horticulture and Sericulture

Punjab emerged as a leader in agricultural infrastructure, with 19,408 projects sanctioned under the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF), amounting to ₹4,478 crore. These projects aim to enhance the state’s farming efficiency and storage capabilities.

Crop diversification continues to be a priority, with the horticulture area expanding to 4.81 lakh hectares, providing farmers with opportunities for higher incomes and sustainable farming practices.

Empowering Women in Sericulture

A notable achievement in sericulture is the surge in cocoon prices, which increased from ₹550 to ₹1,250 per kilogram. This directly benefits the 60% women workforce engaged in the sector, improving livelihoods and promoting gender equality.

Global and Local Growth

Punjab’s horticulture produce is gaining global recognition, with the state’s premium litchis being exported to the UK. On the domestic front, the establishment of new estates dedicated to pears, guavas, and litchis further diversifies the agricultural landscape.

To bolster innovation, Punjab has set up Centres of Excellence for fruits and vegetables. These centers focus on advanced techniques, ensuring higher yields, better quality produce, and knowledge transfer to farmers.

With these transformative initiatives, Punjab is not only ensuring sustainability but also driving economic growth and farmer prosperity. The state’s efforts in horticulture and sericulture exemplify a forward-thinking approach to agriculture, benefitting local communities while making a mark on the global stage.
