Teacher’s Suicide Over 36 Months of Unpaid Salary by Previous Government; While CM Mann Assures Justice to 93 Teachers!

CM Bhagwant Mann orders release of 36 months’ pending salaries for 93 government college teachers, offering justice, relief, and dignity after years of neglect.

Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has taken a historical step to end years of neglect towards the state’s teachers. He announced the payment of 36 months of salary arrears—withheld during the previous government’s tenure—to 93 teachers working in various government colleges, including the Baba Hira Singh Bhattal Institute of Engineering and Technology. This decision is crucial as it follows the tragic suicide of a teacher due to this same salary crisis. The Chief Minister held a special meeting to meet with the affected teachers and the family of the teacher who committed suicide, assuring them of immediate relief.

CM Mann listened intently to the teachers’ problems in the detailed meeting. The most poignant moment was the presence of the two children of the teacher who committed suicide under the stress of unpaid salary and debt. The Chief Minister personally met the family, assuring them of all possible help. This incident had highlighted the dire condition of the education department and the teachers’ plight across the state. Taking the tragedy seriously, CM Mann immediately ordered action and secured the Finance Department’s approval to release the outstanding amount.

These 93 teachers had their salaries withheld continuously for 36 months during the previous administration, severely impacting their families. Many were forced to take high-interest loans for children’s education and sustenance. The stress of uncertain income and rising debt led many teachers to mental distress.

CM Mann promptly stated that teachers are society’s builders, and their neglect is shameful for any government. He asserted that the Aam Aadmi Party government stands with those who faced injustice. He promised that their government aims for grassroots problem-solving, not just announcements, and that this injustice is “unforgivable.” He also assured that such delays would not happen in the future.

Education officials confirmed that the multi-crore outstanding salary will be released in phases, with the family of the teacher who committed suicide and the most distressed teachers prioritized in the first phase.

The teachers present deeply appreciated the CM’s sensitive and swift action, expressing that they finally felt heard after years of struggle. Teacher unions welcomed the decision as proof of the Punjab Government’s sensitivity.

Education experts believe this step is vital for strengthening Punjab’s education system, arguing that financially secure teachers will be fully dedicated to their work, benefiting education quality.

Teacher organizations across Punjab held appreciation events for the CM. Social media widely praised CM Mann’s sensitive handling of the matter.

This incident underscores the importance of sensitivity and swift action in governance. The Punjab Government’s move brings relief to 93 families, instills confidence in the teaching community, and signals a new era for education in the state.
