A recent bank report highlights a significant trend in Punjab’s tax landscape, indicating a higher representation of females among individual tax filers compared to the national average. This surge is attributed to the increasing participation of women in the state’s workforce.
Growth in Female Labour Force Participation
Data from the Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS) spanning from 2018 to 2023 underscored a noteworthy 15% growth in Punjab’s female labour force participation in the 15-59 age group, surpassing the national average of 13.7%.
Insights from Ecowrap Report
The State Bank of India’s Ecowrap report delves into the details, estimating that female tax filers constitute approximately 15% of individual tax filers. States like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Punjab, and West Bengal exhibit a higher proportion of female tax filers.
Punjab’s Leading Role
In Punjab, women make up 20% of the total tax filers, surpassing the national average of 15%. Kerala takes the lead with 26% of female tax filers, followed by Tamil Nadu (25%), and West Bengal and Telangana (20% each).
Regional Disparities
Comparatively, Haryana sees a lower share of female taxpayers at 13%, while Himachal Pradesh stands at 15%. The report emphasizes the need for a comprehensive examination of this trend for further expansion.
Uptick in Direct Income Tax Base
As states conventionally prominent in the income tax base approach saturation, Punjab and Haryana witness a notable uptick in their share of the direct income tax base, signaling a positive shift in the economic landscape.
