The Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has announced the construction of the Zirakpur–Panchkula Bypass, a major infrastructure project aimed at providing an effective solution to chronic traffic congestion in the region. Bhagwant Mann Government to Build 6-Lane Corridor to Ease Traffic Congestion
According to the government, the total estimated cost of the Zirakpur–Panchkula Bypass project is ₹1,878 crore. Once completed, the bypass is expected to significantly reduce traffic jams in Zirakpur, a key transit point that witnesses heavy daily traffic due to its strategic location near Chandigarh, Panchkula, and Mohali.
The Mann government has emphasized that this project will not only improve road connectivity but also boost economic activity in the surrounding areas. Faster travel times will benefit commuters, transporters, and businesses, while also reducing fuel consumption and vehicle emissions caused by long traffic snarls.
The proposed six-lane bypass is part of the Punjab government’s broader vision
The proposed six-lane bypass is part of the Punjab government’s broader vision to strengthen road infrastructure and ensure hassle-free mobility for the public. Officials said the project will be developed with modern engineering standards, keeping long-term urban growth and traffic needs in mind, making it a crucial step towards better regional connectivity and planned development.
The Zirakpur–Panchkula Bypass is also expected to bring major relief to residents living along the existing highway stretch, who often face noise pollution and frequent traffic bottlenecks. With long-distance and heavy vehicles being diverted to the new bypass, local roads will become safer and more accessible for daily commuters, pedestrians, and emergency services.
In addition, the project is likely to generate employment opportunities during its construction phase and later support commercial development in nearby areas. The Mann government has stated that timely completion and quality execution will be ensured, highlighting its focus on infrastructure-led growth. Once operational, the bypass will serve as a vital link in the regional road network, strengthening connectivity between Punjab, Haryana, and the Chandigarh tricity while improving overall travel efficiency.
