Girls being forced into prostitution in Rajasthan

The National Commission for Women said on Friday that evidence has been found of ‘girls being forced into prostitution’ in Bhilwara and some other districts of Rajasthan and in such a situation the Central Government should constitute a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to investigate the entire matter.

Taking cognizance of media reports a few weeks ago, the Women’s Commission constituted a two-member fact-finding team to investigate allegations of auctioning of girls for loan repayment in Bhilwara district. There were reports that girls were being auctioned in Bhilwara to settle disputes over loan repayments.

According to a release issued by the Women’s Commission on Friday, after talking to the concerned families, police administration and local administration, the commission has come to the conclusion that women are being forced into prostitution in several districts of Rajasthan including Sawai Madhopur, Bhilwara and Bharatpur. And it is on the side of the highways. He said that the central government should form an SIT for investigation.

The Commission says, “It appears that Rajasthan has become a source of women trafficking and exploitation of girl child, prostitution. There is a need to make the public aware of these issues and sensitize the administration.

The commission says that child marriage is still continuing in many areas of Rajasthan.

Government should keep a track record of every newborn child

It said that the Rajasthan government should keep a track record of every newborn child and law-enforcement agencies should work pro-actively.

Rekha Sharma, chairperson of the Women’s Commission, had recently written a letter to the Chief Secretary of Rajasthan demanding immediate action in the alleged auction of girls.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) had also issued a notice to the state government in this matter.

In connection with the alleged conversion of a Dalit couple in Madhya Pradesh’s Damoh, the Women’s Commission has written a letter to the Director General of Police, asking them to register an FIR and take action against the accused.
