The reinstatement of former Barmer MLA Mewaram Jain into the Congress party has caused controversy and a split within the party, which is a major change in Rajasthan’s political scene. Graffiti signs insulting Jain appeared in the city of Barmer just two days after he got back, making an already tense situation even worse.

Getting into trouble over Mewaram Jain

Mewaram Jain was an MLA from Barmer three times, but he was kicked out of the Congress party after sexually explicit videos of him went popular on social media. The videos led to serious accusations against Jain. In Jodhpur, a woman made a case of gang rape against him. The Prevention of Money Laundering Act also led the Enforcement Directorate to start a probe into the case.

Even though these accusations were very serious, Jain was allowed to rejoin the party on September 25, 2025, after the All India Congress Committee (AICC) agreed to lift his ban.

Putting up obscene posters in Barmer

After Jain came back to the party, obscene signs started showing up in Barmer City, aimed at him. These offensive signs, with sayings like “Barmer is ashamed, we do not accept rapists,” were put up all over the city, including in Balotra, Barmer, and Ahore.

People in the Congress party who are against Jain’s reinstatement are said to have made these signs. It’s worth noting that former Deputy Speaker Surtan Singh has made a First Information Report (FIR) against the people who put up these posters.

Factions within a party and political fallout

The fact that Jain was reinstated has shown that the Congress party in Barmer is very divided. A group led by former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot wants Jain to come back because they see it as a smart way to improve the party’s position in the region. Another group, led by people like Harish Choudhary and Hemaram Choudhary, is against Jain’s return because of the serious charges against him and the damage that could be done to the party’s reputation.

This fighting within the party has not only made divisions worse, but it has also caused protests and gatherings in public, which have made things even more complicated politically in Barmer.

Effects on the law and politics

When offensive signs showed up and Surtan Singh then filed an FIR, it had legal consequences because it involved defamation and public decency. The police are looking into the case to find out who put up the posters and take action against them.

After Jain was reinstated and caused a lot of controversy, politicians have talked about how the Congress party feels about morality and responsibility. Opposition parties are also paying attention to the situation. They are using it to criticize the Congress party’s internal conflicts and how it handles serious accusations.

Mewaram, there is no doubt that Jain’s return to the Congress party has caused a political storm in Barmer. The offensive posters and the legal actions that followed show how deeply divided the party is and how complicated political ties are in the area. The situation in Barmer is still unstable, and the probes are still going on. This could have effects on the future of the Congress party in Rajasthan.
