Rajasthan Assembly Election 2023: Congress Candidate’s Sudden Demise Leads to Postponement of Karanpur Constituency Polls

Rajasthan Assembly Election 2023: Gurmeet Singh Kooner, a Congress candidate running in the Polls later this month, passed suddenly at AIIMS-Delhi while receiving medical treatment.

On November 12, Gurmeet Singh Koonar, a candidate from the Karanpur assembly constituency, was admitted to the AIIMS Geriatric Medicine Ward. On Wednesday, Kooner passed away from sepsis, septic shock, and renal illness.

Koonar was powerful Karanpur-based three-time MLA:

Koonar was a powerful Karanpur-based Congress leader and three-time MLA. On a Congress ticket, he had won the Karanpur assembly seat in 1998. In 2008, he was elected as an Independent from the same constituency. He was fielded by the Congress once more from Karanpur in 2018 and won.

Representation of Peoples Act Section 52 states that “the returning officer shall announce the adjournment of the poll to a date to be notified later and report the fact to the Election Commission and also to the appropriate authority” in the event that a candidate passes away on the deadline for nominations and his nomination is found valid upon scrutiny, in the event that the candidate who has not withdrawn his candidature passes away, or in the event that a contesting candidate passes away before election.

Election Commission cancels election in constituency:

As a result, in the event that a candidate for legislative assembly passes away, the Election Commission cancels the election in that constituency and sets a new date for the election of that specific seat.

Due to the passing of Congress candidate Gurmeet Singh Kooner, the scheduled November 25 election for the Rajasthani constituency of Karanpur has been postponed. Thus, on November 25, elections for Rajasthan’s remaining 199 seats will take place. Nevertheless, there hasn’t been any formal word regarding the seat’s ballot cancellation as of yet.

The Election Commission will then declare the voting date for the Karanpur seat. However, election results will be announced on December 3 following voting on the remaining 199 state seats.
