A heart-wrenching incident occurred on Monday morning at the Government Girls’ Higher Secondary School in Habur (Poonmanagar) village of Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district. A 9-year-old student, Arbaaz Khan, tragically lost his life when the school’s main entrance gate suddenly collapsed. A teacher was also seriously injured in the incident and was rushed to the district hospital for treatment.

Chaos at the School as Gate Crashes Down

According to eyewitnesses, the tragic accident happened around the time students were entering the school premises. Without warning, the old and weakened entrance gate crumbled and fell, trapping young Arbaaz underneath. Panic and screams broke out in the school courtyard. Teachers and locals rushed to rescue the child, but by the time he was pulled out, he had succumbed to his injuries on the spot.

The injured teacher received first aid and was later referred to the district hospital, where he is reportedly in a stable condition.

Protest Outside the School

Grieving family members and angry villagers gathered outside the school, staging a protest with Arbaaz's body. The locals accused the administration of gross negligence, claiming the gate had been in a dilapidated condition for a long time. Despite several complaints, no action was taken, they said. “This negligence has cost a child’s life,” said one of the protesters.

Second School Tragedy in a Week

This incident comes just days after another school tragedy in Rajasthan. On July 25, the roof of a government school in Peepalodi village, Jhalawar district collapsed, killing seven children and injuring 22 others. That disaster led to the suspension of five education department officials and the initiation of a high-level investigation. Rajasthan Education Minister Madan Dilawar and Secretary Krishna Kunal had assured strict action against those responsible.

Raises Alarming Questions About School Safety

These back-to-back tragedies have once again raised serious concerns about the condition of government school infrastructure in Rajasthan. Citizens and child rights activists are demanding an immediate state-wide audit of school buildings to prevent further loss of innocent lives.
