Rajasthan News: National Green Tribunal (NGT) Takes Stern Measures Against Pollution from Brick Kilns in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh

Rajasthan News: The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has expressed deep concern over the severe pollution caused by brick kilns in the states of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. In response to a petition filed by environmentalist Ram Das, the NGT conducted a hearing on the matter. During the proceedings, the Environment Secretary assured the tribunal of concerted efforts to reduce pollution.

NGT has directed the Pollution Control Boards in the respective states to enforce stringent measures, including the mandatory adoption of zig-zag technology by brick kilns to minimize emissions. The tribunal also questioned the Punjab government for allowing the assembly of farmers in such large numbers.

Advocate Harendra Neel, representing the petitioner

Hearing the case related to pollution from brick kilns in Rajasthan, Advocate Harendra Neel, representing the petitioner, informed the NGT that respiratory diseases caused by pollution are leading to the highest number of deaths globally. He highlighted that over 40% of school children in the state are experiencing the impact of pollution on their lungs. The hearing revealed that out of 2037 brick kilns in the state, only 267 have adopted zig-zag technology to control emissions.

NGT emphasized the hazardous effects of pollution on vital organs such as the brain, kidneys, and heart, as well as its contribution to the increasing prevalence of diabetes. The release of carbon monoxide, nitrogen dioxide, and sulfur dioxide from factories and vehicles is identified as a major contributor to the escalating pollution problem, leading to the formation of smog.

The NGT’s intervention underscores the urgency to address the adverse environmental impact of brick kilns and implement effective measures to curb pollution in the region.
