Ramgarh News: Baiga community constructs road with ‘shramdaan’ after 75 years of hollow promises from government

Ramgarh News: Where there’s a will there’s a way. In an awe-inspiring turn of events, members of a particularly vulnerable tribal group (PVTG) Baiga community have constructed a one-kilometre road after hollow promises from the government ever since Independence. The remarkable feat was achieved by 20 people, including women, who worked for 15 days relentlessly to make the road.

Residents construct road through ‘shramdaan’

Dharti Mandar Village in Kunda block of Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district is located two Kilometres from the Block headquarters and 29 kilometres from the District headquarters. The villagers have built a road from their village Dharti Mandar to Kushumbha village on their own after being deceived by the government for over 75 years now. The Baiga tribe consisting of over 150 members have made the road with their ‘shramdaan’.

‘Fed up with false promises’ ‘

The residents of Dharti Mandar were assured of road construction numerous times. After the government failed to live up to their expectations all these years, the residents took it upon themselves to overcome their adversities.

“We have to negotiate tough terrain to travel outside our village. Fed up with the false promised made by political parties in all these years, we finally decided to make the road ourselves,” a resident said.

Block Mukhiya extends help

Manoj Kumar Sahu (Block Panchayat Mukhiya’ provided the residents of the village with earthmover machine to cu the mound and level the ground. The block Mukhiya said that when the members of the Baiga community contacted him, he bore the cost of the machine to give it to the villagers. Their shramdaan is an example of others, the mukhiya added.

According to media reports, the matter was taken into cognizance by Kunda Block Development Officer Khagesh Kumar who said that a concrete road has now been approved under the District Mineral Foundation Trust (DMFT). The work will soon start there, he said, adding, this step will solve the problem of the villagers permanently.
