'Samundar Me Duba Duba Ke...’ Raj Thackeray Challenges BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, Warns Against Insulting Marathis

Raj Thackeray was against the use of Hindi at Maharashtra schools, threatening to close them down should Hindi be imposed. He also bashed BJP Nishikant Dube,y and that began the Hindi vs Marathi issue.

Raj Thackeray, chief of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, recently gave strict statements against the use of Hindi in schools of Maharashtra. He had threatened the government that MNS will not think twice before closing schools down, in a rally held in Mira Bhayandar, at the time when he said that Hindi should not be imposed on the students who are in classes 1 to 5.

Reaction to Nishikant Dubey's Remarks

BJP MP Nishikant Dubey has recently raised a peg advocating, “Marathi logon ko patak patak se maarenge." Raj Thackeray challenged Dubey to come to Mumbai by saying, Mumbai ke samundar mein dubo dubo ke maarenge. Thackeray cannot be stopped and he responded with a courageous counter-statemen,t which has led to a renewed interest in the escalating language politics in Maharashtra.

Language Policy Controversy in Schools

The Maharashtra government was on the move to withdraw resolutions of making Hindi compulsory in primary classes due to pressure from members of opposition parties, one of them being the MNS. CM Devendra Fadnavis explained that they will still be using the three-language formula, although they will have a committee to clarify the ideal time that they will introduce Hindi. Raj Thackeray has protested against this, stating that it is a move towards making Mumbai part of Gujarat and taking the acquisition of Hindi as a barometer of gauging response to the move.

Cultural Concerns Raised by Raj Thackeray

Raj Thackeray underlined the antiquity of Marathi, which is 2,500-3,000 years old in comparison with the new Hindi, which has existed for only 200 years. He wondered why the events in Maharashtra make national headlines, and no one cares about the violence against the migrants in Gujarat.
