Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has strongly criticized the National Education Policy (NEP), calling it a “saffronised policy” that aims to promote Hindi rather than develop India. His remarks come amid ongoing opposition from the state government against the implementation of the NEP.

Alleges Focus on Promoting Hindi Over National Development

Stalin alleged that the policy is politically motivated, designed to impose one language, one culture, and does not cater to the diverse educational needs of states like Tamil Nadu. He reiterated that his government has firmly rejected the NEP and will continue to follow the state's existing education model, which prioritizes regional languages and inclusive learning.

Alleges Focus on Promoting Hindi Over National Development

"The NEP is not a policy created for the development of India but to develop Hindi. It is an attempt to undermine our Dravidian heritage and impose a unitary education system," Stalin said, adding that the policy aligns with the BJP-led central government's ideological agenda rather than addressing the real challenges in India's education sector.

Tamil Nadu has been one of the most vocal opponents of the three-language formula proposed in the NEP, insisting on continuing with the state's two-language system, which prioritizes Tamil and English. The state government has also expressed concerns over issues such as privatization in education, dilution of state autonomy, and exclusion of regional languages in competitive exams.

Stalin further urged opposition parties and regional leaders to stand united against the imposition of NEP, emphasizing that Tamil Nadu will always safeguard its linguistic and cultural identity. The DMK government has been pushing for an alternative education policy that aligns with the state's progressive and inclusive approach.

With the 2024 general elections approaching, the debate over NEP is likely to become a key political and ideological flashpoint between the state and central governments
