Thane: 17 dead after girder launcher crashes on Samruddhi Expressway, PM Modi announces ex-gratia

Thane News: At least 17 people died while three were injured after the girder-launched machine collapsed in Thane. The accident took place in the wee hours of Tuesday. The accident happened on the site of a construction bridge which was underway near Sarlambe village in Thane. Apart from the reported number of dead, several others are feared to be trapped under the debris.

17 lives lost in tragic accident

In a tragic accident at a construction site in the wee hours of Monday, at least 17 people died. The accident happened after the girder launcher machine, which is used in the construction of Phase III of the Samruddhi Express Highway collapsed in Thane.

Rescue work underway

Many people are also feared trapped beneath the debris. Police personnel, NDRF teams and fire officials were rushed to the spot to carry out rescue work.

“We received a call about a crane falling on workers but later found that the girder launcher, girder and the whole structure fell on them. How it happened is still under investigation. Rescue operation is going on. So far 18 bodies have been recovered,” a TDRF officer said.

In a tweet, Maharashtra minister Ravindra Chavhan has said, “17 people died, in which there were six engineers and three people have been hospitalised. Soon an enquiry will be initiated and will try to find out why this accident happened.”

CM Shinde, PM Modi mourn

Chief minister Eknath Shinde has expressed grief over the deaths and has announced an ex-gratia of ₹5 lakh to the next if kin of deceased. “The CM has ordered a thorough probe of the incident,” a statement from the CMO said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also expressed grief over the accident and announced an ex-gratia for the bereaving family.
