Odisha: At least 280 people were killed and around 900 others were injured in a major railway accident in Odisha on Friday that involved three trains, including the Coromandel Express. This accident prompted rapid rescue efforts that lasted on Saturday morning as well. The death toll may increase since bodies are still being found and because all events were cancelled on Saturday after the Odisha government declared a state of mourning. Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, could travel to Odisha on Saturday.

Unraveling the Cause of the Coromandel Express Disaster

Although the cause of the Coromandel Express disaster was not immediately known, the horrific death toll shows how serious the crash was. The Odisha government revealed that three trains all derailed and crashed at the same location, causing the serious accident, late at night.

How three trains derailed and crashed

  • When several coaches derailed and landed on the nearby tracks, they were part of the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express travelling to Howrah.
  • On its approach to Chennai, the Shalimar-Chennai Central Coromandel Express collided with the Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast Express's derailed carriages.
  • The Coromandel Express's derailed carriages then collided with a goods train's waggons.

Bahanga Baazar Station Becomes the Epicenter of Triple Train Collisions

These three accidents happened close to the Bahanga Baazar station in the Balasore district, which is located 170 kilometres north of Bhubaneswar and 250 kilometres south of Kolkata. All three collisions occurred quickly, and several theories have been put up on which train derailed first and collided with the other two. According to officials, Coromandel, which was on the up line, derailed at 7 p.m. and Bengaluru-Howrah Superfast, which was on the down line, derailed at 6.55 p.m. The cargo train was struck while it was stopped on the track.
